Halloween Countdown: Get writing!

One of the greatest things about the Halloween season is hearing all of the ghost stories—around campfires, in the classroom, and of course, in my head.

Mom says now is a good time to get those stories on paper—so I think today, I'll spend a bit of time writing. Maybe my story will be good enough that Mrs. Kratky will want to share it with the class.

Want to write a ghost—or spooky—story but you don't have a good idea? Don't worry, I've got you covered.

For today's Halloween post, I've conjured up 20 writing prompts that you can use to get your stories started.

20 Spooky Creative Writing Prompts

  1. Something in the attic made a heavy thump. I pushed open the door, peered inside, and saw...
  2. My stuffed tiger came to life—right before my eyes...
  3. I walked into the cemetery after dark...
  4. I was alone in my house, singing karaoke, when suddenly, I heard someone clap...
  5. Write a recipe for a magic potion. What happens to the person who drinks it?
  6. It was a dark and stormy night...
  7. The black cat crouched down, started to hiss, and pounded in front of me...
  8. What if your best friend turned into a zombie?
  9. What would you do if your Halloween costume never came off?
  10. You and your friends get lost in a cave. What do you find?
  11. The local pumpkin patch is owned by a witch—how is it different than others?
  12. Uh oh! The scarecrow in the farmer's field has gone missing. What happened?
  13. You've been granted an interview with a vampire. What 10 questions would you ask him?
  14. Your Halloween candy comes to life. What is happening?
  15. You are on the bus with someone in an alien costume—except it isn't a costume, and it's not Halloween...
  16. The door to the haunted house slams behind you...
  17. Gummy worms have come to life, and they are everywhere...
  18. While out trick-or-treating, you and your friends come to a dark path that leads...
  19. Write a story using as many onomatopoeias as you can. Onomatopoeias are words that sound lie what you mean—like "plop," "drip," and "fizz."
  20. You find a genie (maybe like the one on As You Wish!) who will grant your Halloween wish. What do you wish for?

Are you inspired? I know I am.

Gotta jet and get writing! Oh...if you write a story, send it to me via email at chase.superman.duffy@gmail.com. Maybe I'll publish on the blog—and for sure you'll win a copy of BENEATH THE SOIL, the spookiest book in the Superman Duffy series.
