A to Z Challenge: C is for Canola

Day THREE of the Blogging From A to Z Challenge already? I have a feeling this month is going to go fast! Not sure what the challenge is about? Read all about it here. Missed my theme post? Click here to catch up. And of course, you can read my "A" post here, and "B" here.

Okay, now that you're all caught up, scroll down to read today's post—and to learn more about how you can WIN a complete set of the Superman Duffy graphic novels. That's 15 books for your personal or school library, signed by the author!

C is for Canola

I bet you thought I was going to say "C" is for Chase—which would make sense because I'm the lead character in all 15 adventures. (Well, cartoon me is!) But, the truth is, there wouldn't even be a cartoon me without the Alberta Canola Producers Commission.

That's because about 8 years ago, author Dawn Ius was approached by the Alberta Canola Producers Commission with an idea: a children's book to tell the amazing story of canola. (In case you're not familiar, canola is that yellow crop you see creating a patchwork quilt across the Canadian prairies!)

Fields of Home where "Chase" went back in time to meet the first Canadian canola farmer—Mr. Slovonuk, a Polish farmer who came to Canada with a handful of rapeseed. From those first seeds, an incredible crop began, and today, canola is the country's true Canadian crop. The name says it all—canola is short for Canadian oil!

But of course, the crop's origin story is just one of the exciting things about canola, and from that first graphic novel spawned 14 more books. Oh sure, Chase goes on some exciting adventures—up in space, on a race track, back in time (a few times!), on a pirate ship, to the carnival—but the books also reveal some interesting (and important) facts about canola production, and agriculture in general.

You'll learn about the books throughout the month, as well as how you can use them to support your homework (it's true! Each of the books has a great Alberta curriculum link), but for now, you can check out the list of books here. While you're at it, show your appreciation for the Alberta Canola Producers Commission by leaving a comment at the end of this post.

Or, email a "thank you" to me at chase.superman.duffy@gmail.com. I'll pass on your appreciation AND enter you for your first chance to WIN a complete set of the books. Yup, it's that easy. Simply email a thank you to the Alberta Canola Producers Commission via me by April 10 (or leave a comment at the end of this post), and you could be the proud new owner of 15 signed Superman Duffy graphic novels. I can't wait to pass on your messages of appreciation!

Gotta jet! See you tomorrow for the letter "D"—it's a good one!
