“Halloween was invented by candy companies”—and Other Junk Food Myths

Artist extraordinaire James Grasdal is putting the finishing touches on the 13th book in the Superman Duffy comic series—MYTHCONCEPTIONS. Which, you may have guessed has a little something to do with common “myths.” I love myths! So for this year’s A to Z Blogging Challenge, I’m going to “bust” as many of them as I can—every day (except Sundays) on the blog, throughout April.

Not familiar with the A to Z Challenge? Get the details here, and then hang on, because I’m about to blow your mind with my myth-inspired posts. Comment on the blogs throughout the month for a chance to WIN a complete set of the Superman Duffy comics, including lucky #13, MYTHCONCEPTIONS.

MYTH: Halloween was invented by the candy companies to sell more candy.

Obviously, this is a myth. As a bit of a Halloween buff myself, I can assure you that the origins of my favourite “holiday” have nothing to do with candy—that’s not even the best part of Halloween anyway. I love dressing up. Superman. Frankenstein. An astronaut. These are some of my best costumes…

But I digress.

The truth is, junk food gets a bit of a bad rap. I’m not saying it’s good for you, and I’m the first to admit I’d rather one of my grandma’s home-cooked meals over a trip through the local drive thru any day. But I think some of these myths are ridiculous.

We already debunked the myth that sugar makes kids hyper, but that’s just the frosting on a whole buffet of junk food misconceptions. Mmmmm…frosting. <grin>

It’s silly to think McDonald’s hamburgers won’t go bad over time, even though that famous Internet study a few years ago tried to prove otherwise. So what’s the truth about salads being a healthy option? Greens are great, but add bacon, a lot of salad dressing, fried croutons and... you get the picture. Plus, junk food isn’t necessarily cheaper than nutritious food if you actually sit down to do the math. I guess the bottom line is: do your research. Want to know more? On that note, I’ve gotta jet and start researching tomorrow’s post! Check back tomorrow to see what “K” myths I’m busting on this year’s #AtoZChallenge.
